On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
