Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to contest certain decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
