Puzzling Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Coast Raises Concerns of Likely Algae Outbreak
Officials in the island state are striving to determine a pink slime that has appeared on a secluded beach, with certain experts concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Extensive Presence On Beaches
The magenta-hued slime materialized across a portion of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A like substance has also been documented on areas of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.
Examples Taken for Examination
Samples have been gathered and provided to the environmental agency for testing. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in reaction to shifts in food sources, temperature, rain or illumination".
"The events are occasionally called red or pink tides because the blooms can color the water crimson," the official noted. "Not all algae outbreaks are harmful, with numerous types acting as a key source of food for marine life in the marine food web."

Scientist Opinion on the Current Situation
Faith Coleman, who helped investigate the onset of the previous event said, based on photos of the local event, the probable type involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been lots of these outbreaks around the island of late," she said.
The expert explained sea sparkle did not generate poisons similar to the type involved in the previous severe outbreak, but it does eat tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a outbreak of another organism, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Calls for Investigation and Public Safety
A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in the state, commented it appeared the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and indicated the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events elsewhere.
"Thus Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've gathered and we need to put word out the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist stated she had worries for public safety after noticing a tingling sensation along her limbs and skin while being exposed with tainted seawater.
Accounts of Dead Animals and Appeals for Official Response
An environmental foundation has reported lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the circumstances as an "natural disaster" and urging the government head to inspect and "lead the response that officials must be making".
